In the Botanic Gardens, plants are grown for various practicals for university teaching, especially for practicals on biodiversity and evolutionary theory for Bachelor's students of Biology. Plants play a central role in acquiring skills such as the identification or 'translation' of fossils to modern day plant groupings.
Curator Hans Persoon supervises the practicals and teaches some of the lectures for this course. He is also one of the lecturers on the annual fieldwork course on the island of Terschelling for Bachelor's students of Biology. Various other courses also make excursions in the Gardens.
