Often costs are charged by publishers for open access publishing (the Publication Fee or Article Processing Charge - APC).
Open access funding
Ask yourself the three following questions about funding your open access publication:
At best your publisher is part of a Big Deal. This means that you usually don't have to pay for your open access publication. In addition, the University Library has obtained discounts with a number of publishers.
The VSNU (Association of universities in the Netherlands) has reached agreements with several large publishers about Open Access: the Big Deals. Large packets of electronic jounals that are bought by many Dutch universities are part of the Big Deals. Have a look at the national open access agreements, including an up-to-date list of journals within these deals.
At the moment national agreements have been made with the following publishers
- American Chemical Society (ACS)
- Lippincott Williams & Wilkins
- Springer (see also the discount for SpringerOpen journals)
- Taylor & Francis
- De Gruyter
In addition to the national agreements Utrecht University has entered into discount agreements with a number of publishers:
Authors get a 15 % discount on the publication costs in one of the almost 300 open access journals of Biomed Central. The discount will be automatically taken into account by the publisher. More information on this discount can be found on the website of Biomed Central.
Authors get a 25% discount on publicaton fees. The discount will be automatically taken into account by the publisher.
Authors get a 15% discount on the publication costs in one of the journals of the Microbiology Society and even a 50% discount on the publication costs in JMM Case Reports. You will find more information on the website of Microbiology Society.
Authors get a 15% discount on publication costs in one of the over 200 full open access journals of Springer. The discount will be automatically taken into account by the publisher. You will find more information about this discount on the website of Springer.
NWO (Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research)
You may include the costs for open access publishing in your project application. Only costs which you make for publishing in full open access journals will be reimbursed. Do you want to find out more about the NWO policy? Here you will find more information.
The Horizon2020 project by the European Commission reimburses the following open access publications:
- Articles in full open access journals
- Articles in hybrid journals
Please note: the costs are only reimbursed for the duration of the project. No maximum amount has been fixed, but the costs must fit within the budget of the project.
