Borrowing literature
A large part of the material in our physical collections is available for loan. On this page you will find information about borrowing library material.
You need a library card to borrow items. UU students and staff will find their card in the MyUU app.
You can take books you want to borrow from the open shelves in the library. Is an item housed in the depositories or already checked out by another borrower? Then you can request or reserve it in WorldCat and collect it in the library locations of your choice. Please use the self-issue machines to check out material.
Not all materials can be borrowed. In WorldCat, they are indicated by 'No loan'.
Number of items
You may borrow up to thirty items at a time. Would you like to borrow more? Then fill in the request form to borrow more items.
Loan period and renewal
The standard loan period is 28 days. The loan period is automatically renewed. If this is not possible, you will receive an email and must return the material. You then have 6 days to return it without incurring a fine.
Different loan periods apply to borrowing from other libraries and to borrowing test materials from the Social Sciences Test Library.
Returning books
Return the borrowed item(s) using the return machines at one of our locations. Press the Return button and place the item (or items, one by one) in the return machine. You can then choose to have a return receipt printed or sent to you by email.
Rules regarding borrowing
When you borrow materials from Utrecht University Library, you agree to our lending regulations.
