Diamond open access policy
Diamond open access means that no costs are charged to authors or readers of publications. The university supports parties that enable diamond open access publishing. We do that in two ways.
We support journals
Entering into Subscribe to Open (S2O) deals is a way in which the library can support existing journals in their transition to a diamond open access model. Instead of the library subscribing to a journal (as is usual in the case of closed access journals), it will change from subsciber to donor. In this way, journals can be made fully open access without charging costs to authors.
We support initiatives for open infrastructure
An open infrastructure enables open access publishing, e.g. through publishing software and archives for sustainable storage. Utrecht University is a proud supporter of the initiatives below. This fits in with the open access policy of Utrecht University.
Directory of Open Access Journals DOAJ is a unique and extensive index of open access journals from around the world, driven by a growing community, committed to ensuring quality content is freely available online for everyone.
Directory of Open Access Books The Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) is a community-driven discovery service that indexes and provides access to scholarly, peer-reviewed open access books and helps users to find trusted open access book publishers.
Open Access in European Networks The Open Access in European Networks (OAPEN) Library is a repository of freely accessible academic books. OAPEN works with publishers and research funders (like the Dutch Research Council) to continue building a quality-controlled collection of Open Access books.
Public Knowledge Project The Public Knowledge Project (PKP) is a university research and development initiative that develops open source (free) software, provides support services and learning opportunities, and conducts research, all with an eye to improving the quality and reach of scholarly publishing.
CLOCKSS CLOCKSS is a collaboration of the world’s leading academic publishers and research libraries. It provides a sustainable archive to ensure the long-term survival of digital scholarly content.
ORCID ORCID is an non-profit organisation that is supported by a worldwide community of, amongst others, universities, publishers and funders. ORCID offers a personal digital identifier that links a researcher's name automatically to their publications and professional profile.
OpenJournals The Dutch journal platform Openjournals offers academic, peer-reviewed journals a platform for online and fully (non-APC/Diamond) open access publishing.
DSpace DSpace is a web application, allowing researchers and scholars to publish documents and data. The Utrecht University Repository is running on DSpace software.
Sherpa RoMEO Sherpa RoMEO is an online service that aggregates and analyses publishers’ open access policies from around the world. Additionally, they provide summaries of self-archiving permissions and conditions of rights given to authors on a journal-by-journal basis.
ArXiv arXiv is a curated open platform where researchers around the world can share and discover new, relevant, emerging science and establish their contribution to advancing research.
PsyArXiv PsyArXiv (psychology preprint archive) is designed to facilitate rapid dissemination of psychological research and is hosted on the Open Science Framework.
MediArXiv MediArXiv is a free, community-led digital preprint archive for media, film, and communication research hosted on the Open Science Framework.
