BSc “Afstudeerproject” options at WEN
Welcome on the WEN-page for BSc students! If you want to do a project at WEN, you're in the right place. Please find our application process below.
First of all, read the course rules and regulations. If you have any questions regarding the course rules, regulations, forms and documents, you need to contact the course coordinators (scriptie.bio@uu.nl). Group coordinators are not the course coordinators. They can only help you to find projects within their group.
Determine where you are doing your project. WEN only supervises projects that are done entirely within our group (for this, please apply for an 'internal project'). Note that we do not provide supervision (i.e. daily supervision, formative assessment) for internships (stages) OR theses (scripties) at external institutes. We can however provide examination (i.e. grading, summative assessment) for such projects, which we do on a case by case basis depending on how well these projects fit within our research (for this, apply for an 'examiner-only' project).
Steps for an 'internal' project:
Please read about WEN's research topics on our research page and think about what kind of project you are looking for. UU students can also find specific projects on Konjoin searching for the tag: #WENUU. Note that you need to log in with your Solis-id to see all projects.
If you found something you like, please apply for a WEN internal project using this form. You don't have to, but if you found any topics, or projects on KonJoin, that interest you, please say so in the corresponding fields and/or motivation. Not all projects will be on KonJoin so it is fine to apply for a WEN project in general.
Additionally, if you are interested in a specific project that's on KonJoin and the corresponding researcher listed their e-mail, you can also just contact them directly.
Steps for an 'examiner-only' project:
Arrange your internship AND thesis with your external institute of choice, making sure:
that they are able to provide adequate supervision for BSc-projects. Make sure to ask whether your future supervisor(s) have had scientific training, and whether the institute has supervised university students before. WEN cannot guarantee the scientific quality of the supervision at institutes that we have no collaborations with, so this responsibility remains with the student.
that they will perform the daily supervision of both internship and thesis components of the project.
After you've done this, please fill out the examiner-only form.
Our team reviews new applications during the first two weeks of each month. If your application moves forward, we will contact you to schedule an initial meeting. We will also inform you if we are unable to accommodate your application at this time.
Important points
- To apply for an internship (stage) and thesis (scriptie) at WEN, please fill in this form.
- Please arrange your internship (stage) and thesis (scriptie) components of the “afstudeerproject” in the same period. This structure is preferred by the WEN Group and is compulsory for the course (with motivated exceptions sometimes allowed).
- If you do your internship (stage) part outside the UU, you must arrange the supervision of both your thesis and project at that institute as well. WEN provides examiners if we think the topic is relevant to our research. To apply for this, please fill out this form.
- WEN can offer the extended research project (PLONS) on a case by case basis. Please mention this in your application.
