Education

At the Wildlife Ecology & Nature Restoration group (WEN), we contribute actively to education within the Department of Biology at Utrecht University, teaching a variety of courses on topics related to wildlife ecology, conservation science, and ecological restoration. Our teaching integrates current research insights with hands-on approaches, fostering critical thinking and applied skills in ecology. In addition to our teaching activities, we offer a range of BSc and MSc thesis projects. These projects are embedded in our ongoing research and can be tailored to match the interests and academic background of the student.

Student Projects at WEN

Tropical Ecology, Land use, and Nature Conservation (BSc level 3)

The aim of the course is to show students that both fundamental and practical knowledge of ecology and land use is essential for nature management in tropical ecosystems. Students delve into current tropical ecology topics for creating a lecture and making a data assignment based on the literature. They empathize with different stakeholders with regard to tropical land use.

Conservation Science and Impact (MSc)

This course explores the field of conservation science, its theoretical foundations, practical applications, and the broader societal and environmental impacts of conservation efforts. Through a multidisciplinary approach, students gain a comprehensive understanding of conservation challenges, strategies, and the potential consequences of conservation decisions.

Ecology of Natural Resources (MSc)

This course strengthens students’ expertise in plant-, microbial and landscape ecology and to shows how this expertise is of vital importance to natural resource management. The central theme are ecosystem services, benefits provided either directly through material goods (e.g. timber, food or medicinal plants) or indirectly as a result of their basic functioning (e.g. carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, climate regulation, control of water and quality and crop pollination).
