Sedimentation strategies

The worldwide decline in sediment supply is problematic as deltas need sediment to maintain elevation and survive increasing rates of sea-level rise and subsidence. Sedimentation strategies are necessary to prevent them from drowning.

Retaining and relocating sediment

The Water, Climate and Future Deltas hub engages in research assessing different sedimentation strategies that aim to increase sedimentation in the Rhine-Meuse delta. We distinguish between two types of strategies: strategies to retain sediment ('sedimentation enhancing strategies') and strategies to relocate sediment.

Global perspective

Hub researchers compiled a dataset to compare the functioning and effectiveness of different sedimentation enhancing strategies in deltas globally, such as tidal river management in the Southwestern Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna delta.
