Dr. René Koekkoek

Dr. René Koekkoek is an Assistant Professor in Political History. His first book The Citizenship Experiment explores debates about the limits of equal citizenship and democratic participation in the late eighteenth-century Atlantic revolutions. In his current research project, funded by a Veni grant, he traces the long-term history of ideas and practices of reparations for historical injustices. He writes regularly for national newspapers and magazines.

How and under what circumstances did ideas and practices of repairing historical injustice emerge and develop over time in the early modern period?

René Koekkoek has been a member of the Utrecht Young Academy, a bridge between young and talented researchers, since 2021.
