Dr. Ralph Temmink

Ralph Temmink is an assistant professor in ecology and nature restoration at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development. He is dedicated to understanding and restoring wetlands, peatlands, salt marshes, and intertidal ecosystems, with a focus on habitat-modifying species such as oysters, mussels, and ecosystem-engineering plants. His research integrates ecosystem functioning and restoration, using innovative tools like 3D-printed biodegradable substrates to mimic natural processes and enhance recovery. Temmink also specializes in sustainable peatland management, and he develops rewetting and paludiculture strategies to reduce drainage impacts and greenhouse gas emissions while enabling economic use. He involves different stakeholders in his research and aims to bridge gaps between science and practice.
