Margreet van Es is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies. She studied History at Leiden University and obtained her PhD from the University of Oslo in Norway. Her post-doctoral research project on anti-Muslim sentiments in Europe was financed by the European Committee via a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fund.

Margreet’s research combines social history and sociology with the anthropology of religion. Her current project focuses on the relationship between religious diversity, food practices, social mobility, cosmopolitanism, and belonging.

What can the emergence of trendy, alcohol-free halal restaurants in Rotterdam tell us about religious diversity as a lived experience, and the role of the private sector therein?

Margreet van Es has been a member of the Utrecht Young Academy, a bridge between young and talented researchers, since 2022.
