Dr. Laura Filion.

Laura Filion is an Assistant Professor in the Physics Department who works in the Soft Condensed Matter group. She uses computer simulations to study the behaviour of so-called “soft matter” - a type of matter that includes, for instance, polymers, colloids, liquid crystals and emulsions.

In particular, she investigates the behaviour of the phases (crystals, liquids, gases) that form in systems of colloidal particles; particles with a size roughly between a few nanometres and a few micrometres (much smaller than a human hair, but much larger than an atom). In 2013, she received a Veni grant for her research into defects and dynamics in crystals made out of colloidal particles.

Laura Filion has been a member of the Utrecht Young Academy, a bridge between young and talented researchers, since 2017.
