Dr. Hieke Huistra
Hieke Huistra is an Assistant Professor in the history of science and medicine at the Freudenthal Instititute and the Descartes Centre. Her current research focuses on the changing role of medicine in birth and death; earlier, she has published on human tissue collections, fatness, and digital humanities. She teaches academic integrity courses. In addition to her work at the university, she writes a biweekly column in the Dutch newspaper Trouw on how science works.
How did birth and death become medical events?
Hieke Huistra has been a member of the Utrecht Young Academy, a bridge between young and talented researchers, since 2019.
