Research at the Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS takes place in the following groups:

  • Language structure: variation and change: Morphsyntactic variation in dialects and across languages, language status, language contact, language change in historical perspective and modern multilingual Europe.
     
  • Language, logic and information: Lexical, semantic and computational properties of the language system, pragmatics, semantic variation, linguistic resources and language technology.
     
  • Linguistic theory and language acquisition: Phonology and syntax: theoretical studies about first, second language and multilingual acquisition.
     
  • Language processing and language pathology: Language and speech in the brain of monolingual and multilingual speakers, language and speech disorders (dyslexia, SLI, language attrition, aphasia).
     
  • Language and education: Dutch written language proficiency, English at primary school, bilingual education, communicative language teaching at secondary school level, testing language proficiency.
     
  • Language and communication: Formulation in communication, in specific professional contexts (commercial communication, legal language) and in general in relation to non-verbal communication, emotion and affect.

Research facilities

The Institute boasts excellent lab facilities (including an EEG/ERP lab, a baby lab, eye-trackers), as well as access to fMRI.
