UNIJURIS
The UNIJURIS project aims to uncover whether traditional permissive principles of jurisdiction, in particular territoriality, can still play a useful role in an interdependent and increasingly borderless world where states may unilaterally want to further global interests. It is divided into seven themes:
- Corporate social responsibility and extraterritoriality
- Countering climate change through extraterritorial jurisdiction
- Extraterritorial jurisdiction on the internet
- Extraterritorial jurisdiction over corruption
- Jurisdictional conflicts over data protection
- Port state jurisdiction & the sustainable use of marine resources
- Port State jurisdiction & the protection of the marine environment
NEREUS PROGRAM
NILOS researchers participate in the Nereus Program on Predicting Future Oceans. The Nereus Program is a global interdisciplinary initiative between the Nippon Foundation and the University of British Columbia that was created to further our knowledge of how best to attain sustainability for our world’s oceans.
SUSTAINABLE OCEAN
The research project ‘Accommodating New Interests at Sea: Legal Tools for Sustainable Ocean Governance’ (SUSTAINABLEOCEAN) aims to offer a theory of interest- and regime-interaction in ocean governance. The research question is: how can the law contribute to the sustainable use of the oceans and strike a balance between competing interests at sea? The project focuses on the interplay between the law of the sea, climate change law and energy law.
