The Week of the Imagination

The Week of the Imagination kicks off on Monday! During a full evening’s program, we will reflect on the inspiration behind the week and, amongst other things, engage in conversation with Jonathan White (Professor of Political Science at the London School of Economics) and Laura Pereira (Professor of Sustainability Transformations and Futures at Wits University).

Taking ‘Liberating the Imagination’ as our theme, we will discuss how we can break free from a future that holds us captive: how can we democratise our visions of the future? And how can we ensure that the major challenges facing us as a society ultimately strengthen democracy rather than undermining it?

Op maandag vindt de officiële opening van de Week van de Verbeelding plaats! Tijdens een avondvullend programma staan we stil bij de aanleiding van de week, en gaan we onder andere in gesprek met Jonathan White (hoogleraar politicologie aan de London School of Economics) en Laura Pereira (professor in Sustainability Transformations and Futures aan Wits University).

Tuesday will be dedicated to the symposium ‘Imagination in the Classroom’. What approaches can we adopt to bring imagination back into the university? In this day and age, it is no longer enough simply to learn about what is (or has been); education must also be about what could be and what we might wish for. How can we learn from and with one another to achieve this?

During the symposium, various activities will take place in the Vening Meinesz A Building at Utrecht University, including the official opening of the exhibition marking 10 years of the Urban Futures Studio.  

The event will take place from 12:00 to 17:00 in the Vening Meinesz A Building at Utrecht University. The exact programme is yet to be announced.

Dinsdag staat in het teken van het symposium Verbeelding in het klaslokaal. Welke manieren kunnen we inzetten om verbeelding terug te brengen in de Universiteit? In deze tijd volstaat het niet langer om alleen te leren wat er is (geweest), maar moet onderwijs ook gaan over wat zou kunnen zijn en wat we zouden kunnen willen. Hoe kunnen we van en met elkaar leren om dit te bewerkstelligen?

Tijdens het symposium zullen er verschillende activiteiten plaatsvinden in het Vening Meinesz A-gebouw aan de Universiteit Utrecht, en zal de officiële opening zijn van de expositie waarin we stilstaan bij 10 jaar Urban Futures Studio.

Het evenement vindt plaats van 12:00 – 17:00 in het Vening Meinesz A-gebouw aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Het exacte programma wordt nog bekendgemaakt.

PhD students from the Urban Futures Studio are organising a closed workshop in which they will examine the changing politics of the imagination, potential tensions between sustainability and security, and how this might influence the role and responsibility of academics.

PhD-onderzoekers van de Urban Futures Studio organiseren een besloten workshop waarbij ze inzoomen op de veranderende politiek van de verbeelding, mogelijke spanningen tussen duurzaamheid en veiligheid, en hoe dit van invloed kan zijn op de rol en verantwoordelijkheid van wetenschappers. 

Thursday marks the start of a two-day, small-scale working conference: Democracy in the Reconstruction of the Netherlands – Imagination as the Key to Broad Civic Engagement. During this conference, we will bring together people who, collectively, are able to use imagination as the key to envisioning a new collective future. Together with artists and designers, policymakers, and scientists, we will explore how imagining possible futures can strengthen democratic practice.  

The first day will focus on exchange and research into the key ingredients that can unleash the imagination. The second day is organised in collaboration with MOOI Noord-Holland, as part of their ‘Festival VOOR omgevingskwaliteit’. 

This working conference is a closed, invitation-only event.

Donderdag markeert de start van een tweedaagse, kleinschalige werkconferentie: Democratie in de wederombouw van Nederland - verbeelding als sleutel voor brede burgerbetrokkenheid. Tijdens deze conferentie brengen we mensen bij elkaar die samen in staat zijn om verbeelding in te zetten als sleutel voor het verbeelden van een nieuwe collectieve toekomst. Met kunstenaars en ontwerpers, beleidsmakers en wetenschappers verkennen we hoe de verbeelding van mogelijke toekomsten de democratische praktijk kan versterken. 

De eerste dag staat in het teken van uitwisseling en onderzoek naar sleutelingrediënten die verbeelding kunnen bevrijden. De tweede dag wordt georganiseerd met MOOI Noord-Holland, tijdens hun Festival VOOR omgevingskwaliteit.

Deze werkconferentie is besloten en alleen voor genodigden.
