Welcome to the Uninvited Futuring exhibition!
This exhibition was part of the Mixed Classroom in 2016/2017.
The Netherlands has a strong tradition of planning for the long term. At the moment, however, academics, professionals, and policymakers alike are struggling to imagine how we will live in the future. As the geographer Helen Couclelis puts it: ‘where has the future gone?’
The exhibition Uninvited Futuring challenges visitors to take a step back and engage with the future beyond conventional thinking. The ideas are developed by Master’s students from Utrecht University, who were challenged to rethink and design the city of 2040. Uninvited Futuring boasts four very different imaginaries. The overarching question: what would it mean to develop one million extra dwellings in the Netherlands by 2040?
This online exhibition is a part of the mixed classroom ‘Techniques of Futuring: How to imagine a Post-Fossil future?’ which took place from November 2016 until January 2017. In this course, Master’s students and policymakers learned from each other in dealing with uncertain futures. The physical exhibition was staged in Vechtclub XL on January 25, 2017.
