Exposome: the obesogenic society
16 January 2024, Utrecht City Center University Library
The number of overweight people in the Netherlands has been steadily increasing for decades, including among children. The Municipality of Utrecht aims for at least 91% of youth having a healthy weight by 2040, compared to 86% in 2019. But how did it come to this?
In collaboration with the research consortium Exposome-NL, we are organizing a series of public dialogues on the "Exposome": all non-genetic causes of disease. On January 16, during the first public dialogue in this series, we discussed being overweight and how it is fueled by our current society and economy.
We did this with three speakers:
- Roel Vermeulen is Professor of Environmental Epidemiology and Exposome Analysis at Utrecht University and director of the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS). He is an internationally recognized expert in the field of the exposome.
- Joline Beulens is Professor of Epidemiology at Amsterdam UMC, conducting research on health behaviors, diabetes, and metabolism.
- Joop de Bruin is a former general practitioner and initiator of Oost voor Elkaar, an initiative in East Utrecht aimed at improving collective health by fostering social cohesion.
