Sustainable Ocean

The ocean occupies 70% of our planet and contains 97% of Earth’s water. It makes our planet habitable, regulates weather and climate, and is helping slow down global climate change by absorbing approximately one-third of the excess CO2 that humans have emitted to the atmosphere. The ocean supports life and biodiversity, and provides livelihoods, trade, food, energy and other resources to humanity.

Ocean science has to be truly interdisciplinary to achieve ocean health and our community stems from the need to undertake a participative and transformative process so that academics from a broad range of disciplines (e.g., natural scientists, governance experts, economists, historians, social scientists), educators, policy makers, managers, and civil society can work together to ensure that ocean science delivers greater benefits for both ocean health and for society.
