About the Sustainable Ocean Community

The Sustainable Ocean Community stems from the need to address key ocean challenges related to sustainability and is part of the ‘Pathways to Sustainability’ strategic theme of Utrecht University. It was formed in collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, NIOZ.

We aim to be an inclusive, diverse and inspiring platform for scholars and stakeholders from a broad range of disciplines to shape and implement regional contributions to pressing global ocean and sustainability challenges.

    Our ambition is to

    • Facilitate innovative ocean research, education and engagement to deliver greater benefits for ocean health and society.
    • Strengthen disciplinary excellence and transdisciplinary communication that enables the co-creation of transformative projects.
