In his research, Prof. Krijn De Jong (Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis) has developed new methods for making chemical products – like plastics, cleaning products and antifreeze – in a sustainable way. All of these products are currently made from petroleum. De Jong and his team have devised a catalyst that enables biomass to be converted into the exact same building blocks. This allows the same quality of sustainable products to be made without the use of petroleum.

De Jong’s research will make it relatively easy for the chemical industry to switch to sustainable raw materials in the future. De Jong is now working together with the chemical industry to further develop the new techniques so they can later be applied on a bigger scale.
