Climate Justice: Strategies for Action
Climate justice is about fairness in how we handle climate change impacts. It involves making sure everyone, especially those in marginalized communities, gets a say in decisions that affect them. Despite its widespread use, there's still confusion about what climate justice really means and how to put it into practice effectively.
Climate justice emphasizes the importance of fair benefit, risk and burden sharing, and inclusive decision-making processes that involve local communities - especially those most affected. However, people in marginalized and low-income communities, even though they're the ones who often face the biggest impacts of climate change, their wishes and needs are often not included as much in making decisions that affect them resulting in climate unjust policies. At the same time, anecdotal evidence points at grassroot initiatives of societal actors to explore approaches for just climate adaptation processes, that could provide opportunities to learn from and scale.
Goals
- Defining Climate Justice. The team will study different ideas about climate justice from various perspectives to create a clear framework. This will help guide fair practices in dealing with climate issues.
- Learning from Good Practices. The team collects stories from the Netherlands (including Dutch Caribbean islands) where communities are taking fair and inclusive approaches to adapt to climate change. These examples will inspire others and show what works in real life.
The outcome will include a detailed review of climate justice ideas and practical examples, as well as visual tools to explain these concepts easily.
