December 2021 | Two more Great Policy Successes books are on their way
Two doctoral dissertations ahead in 2022 The 'harvesting year' of 2022 will receive further allure by the impending completion of Lauren Fahy's and Jo Luetjens's PhD theses, which are currently in their last stages of writing/editing. New collaboration with Dutch Ministry of the Interior / ICTU Foundation, 2022-2026 Along with USG colleague Mirko Noordegraaf, SPG's Paul 't Hart has received a 4-year, 300k euro subsidy to identify, assess, explain and draw lessons from cases of successful public governance in The Netherlands. A parttime postdoc and a PhD student will be recruited to conduct the studies we envisage. |

12 May 2021 | Publication of the 'Governing the Pandemic' book Paul 't Hart, together with Arjen Boin (Leiden University) and Allan McConnell (University of Sydney), in the book Governing the Pandemic: The Politics of Navigating a Mega-Crisis present unique insights into how governments have responded to the immense challenges of managing the coronavirus pandemic. In the book they examine how governing systems have (i) made sense of emerging transboundary threats (ii) mobilised systems of governance and often fearful and sceptical citizens (iii) crafted narratives amid high uncertainty and (iv) are working towards closure. The book appeals to anyone seeking to understand ‘what’s going on?’, but particularly academics and students across multiple disciplines, journalists, public officials, politicians, non-governmental organisations and citizen groups. 16 April 2018 | 'Great Policy Successes': A Research Seminar The SPG Team hosted a research seminar on 16-17 April 2018. Authors who contribute to the Great Policy Successes volume and public policy scholars met in Utrecht to present and discuss 18 case studies, with a view towards early 2019 publication. The Great Policy Successes volume aims to reset the agenda for teaching, research and dialogue on public policy performance which is currently dominated by the language related to shortcomings and failures. This is done through a series of in-depth case study on stand-out public policy accomplishments. The Great Policy Successes Seminar provided a platform for volume authors and public policy scholars to discuss conceptual, methodological, and theoretical related issues regarding to those cases. 9 November 2017 | Judith van Erp and Sandra van thiel evaluated the Dutch Gamlbing Authority On the 9th of november the Dutch minister of Justice and Safety sent the Evaluation of the Dutch Gambling Authority to Parliament. The evaluation was carried out by a team of Dutch scholars including profs. Judith van Erp (UU) and Sandra van Thiel (RU). Their main conclusion was that the Gambling Authority has much to gain by intensifying its efforts to coordinate the prevention of gambling addiction. The Gambling Authority plays a valuable role in prevention of organized crime and money laundering. Its legitimacy and performance in consumer protection however are hindered by the delay in parliamentary acceptance of a new law that regulates online gambling – currently, the Gambling Authority only has jurisdiction over landbased gambling. Stefanie Beyens, Judith van Erp and Koen Verhoest co-organized an international academic workshop on mismatches between reputation and performance in public organizations. The workshop was hosted by the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence ACTORE , the Antwerp Consortium on the Organization of Rulemaking and Multilevel Governance in Europe. This small scale workshop attended by scholars from the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Israel, allowed for intensive discussions about mismatches between organizational performance and their reputation. A paper and special issue are in preparation. |
