Oceanographer Erik van Sebille studies how ocean currents transport heat, nutrients, marine organisms and plastic litter between different regions of the ocean. In 2016 he received an ERC Starting Grant of 1.5 Million Euros to investigate how plastic moves in the ocean. “For that, ocean currents alone are not enough; you also have to study the influence of waves and storms, how fast plastic can decompose into tiny pieces under different conditions, that kind of thing. You only get a good idea of what happens in the ocean when you include all of those factors.”
