What we do

The Research Platform on Migration Law (MiLa) promotes the advancement of research on laws and regulations relating to individuals who will or have been migrating, such as those leaving their country or place of habitual residence to settle in another state. The platform focuses on migrants in a broad sense, including workers, asylum seekers, European citizens and stateless persons. MiLa also examines the role of actors and institutions that shape migration dynamics.

The interplay between various legal domains

Embedded within the Utrecht Montaigne Centre for Rule of Law and Administration of Justice, MiLa delves into the interplay between various legal domains — refugee law, nationality law, administrative law, private law, criminal law and international and European law. By fostering a deeper understanding of these legal intersections, the platform serves as a leading academic hub, contributing to the development of more inclusive societies where migrants and citizens alike share a sense of belonging and justice. Central to this mission is the belief that migration law can be a powerful tool for the rule of law, helping to build societies founded on shared values and mutual respect.
