EQUALS is dedicated to studying inequality and discrimination through law. Our research explores how legal systems both reflect and shape social inequalities, and how law can be used as a tool for justice and inclusion.

At its core, EQUALS explores how law can both reinforce and resist inequality and how legal research can contribute to a more inclusive society.

We examine how categories such as gender, race, class, disability, migration status, sexuality and other categories intersect to produce unequal outcomes in multiple social domains. We pay particular attention to forms of structural discrimination - patterns of exclusion that are often embedded in laws, policies, and everyday practices – and intersectionality.

Our researchers bring together expertise across different legal fields and jurisdictions, combining doctrinal, empirical, theoretical and criminological approaches. EQUALS also actively collaborates with students, social actors, and other disciplines, contributing to informed public debate and practical legal reform.
