Musculoskeletal Tissue Regeneration

ESR project

3.8

Title of project

Biomaterial-based drug delivery in intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration

We offered

A PhD student position in the interdisciplinary area of regenerative medicine. The project will focus on biomaterial-based delivery for intervertebral disc (IVD) regeneration and inhibition of inflammation.

Department

The Department of Orthopaedics at the UMCU, is a dynamic and diverse translational research group firmly embedded in orthopedic clinical practice.

Description

You will work on biomaterial-based delivery of bioactives in IVD bioreactor culture, developed by several partners of the consortium. Tissue will either consist of human degenerated IVDs or from canine IVDs, either or after in vitro induction of degeneration. Tools will be set up for nonivasive imaging of regeneration. The biological readouts will be inflammation, regeneration and stem cell chemotaxis.

RESCUE

This project is part of RESCUE, a multidisciplinary, intersectoral and interdisciplinary PhD training programme in Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cells organised by UMC Utrecht (coordinator) and Utrecht University. RESCUE is partly funded by the European Commission under Horizon 2020's Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions COFUND scheme. There are specific requirements with regards to English language and mobility for candidates who would like to take part in this programme. More information
