Cardiovascular Tissue Regeneration
ESR project
2.5
Title of project
Vascularized organs on a chip
We offered
A 4-year PhD student position in the interdisciplinary area of regenerative medicine. The project will focus on creating and testing microfluidic systems to mimic blood vessels and vacularized organs on a chip.
Department
The Department of nephrology and hypertension at UMCU, group located at the regenerative medicine institute Utrecht
Description
The Cheng research group aims to develop new microfluidic systems that combines organ cells with complex vascular support to create ex vivo vascularized grafts. Current ongoing projects include blood brain barrier recreation for development of an organ on a chip –drug screening device and vascularization of the complex re-absorption and filtration units of the kidney. The group offers a PhD student position for young investigators who are interested in vascular biology and complex tissue engineering.
In this COFUND project, the PhD student will:
- Optimize the current vascular microfluidic system in the lab for the support of flow of circulating cells
- Complete the challenge of creating a functional renal re-absorption unit
- Complete the challenge of creating a functional filtration unit
- Optimize and explore the use of the blood brain barrier device in drug screening

RESCUE
This project is part of RESCUE, a multidisciplinary, intersectoral and interdisciplinary PhD training programme in Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cells organised by UMC Utrecht (coordinator) and Utrecht University. RESCUE is partly funded by the European Commission under Horizon 2020's Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions COFUND scheme. There are specific requirements with regards to English language and mobility for candidates who would like to take part in this programme. More information
