Translating behavioural science insights to public policy

Collaboration Utrecht University and The Netherlands Institute for Social Research (SCP).

Insights from the social and behavioural sciences can be used more to inform governmental policy making, in order to create more effective policy that aligns with citizens views and behaviour. This postdoc project aims to bridge the gap between science and society by setting up a collaboration between the Sustainable Cooperation gravitation programme (SCOOP) and The Netherlands Institute for Social Research (SCP).

The goals of this postdoc project are as follows:

  1. To synthesize research of both institutes to connect insights about mechanisms on human behaviour and behavioural change to policy analyses and research from the SCP
  2. To develop lines of collaborative research between the two institutes, either by sharing knowledge, combining and analysing existing data in novel ways, or developing new research questions together.
  3. To create a network of researchers from both institutes with similar interests and organise meetings with policy makers to share insights between parties.

In this three-year project, the two postdoctoral researchers are employed both at Utrecht University and SCP in a bridge position. The project aims to produce different types of products. For example, we are currently examining the ways in which universities and SCP align and differ in their approach to research to determine ways in which the collaboration could optimally take form. Another product will synthesize social psychological research on polarization as a potential addition to SCP research.
