Merlin Schaeffers will be the first to give a keynote lecture. He will present his research on how international immigration is transforming societies, currently with a particular focus on citizens’ clashing views on the definition and prevalence of discrimination. This lecture will be followed by a discussion, led by Claudia Diehl and Özge Bilgili.

Vamba Sherif will give the second Keynote lecture of the day. He will give an insight into his work as an essayist, speaker, book and film critic. His recent works includes the memoir Unprecentend Love (2021), the anthology The Comet (2022) and the historical novel The Emperor’s Son(2023), which is about Samori Touré, the great African resistant leader to colonialism. After his lecture, there will be time for a q and a.

During the breaks between panels, coffee and tea will be available at the stairwell areas of Janskerkhof 2-3 on both the ground and first floors. We kindly ask that you take your drink and move away from these areas to avoid crowding - feel free to spread out throughout the building or step outside. The theatre play “Who cares?” by the FNV Migrant Domestic Workers Theatre Collective will be shown at the MCW lab at Kromme Nieuwegracht 20 from 19:30 - 21:30. Registration for the play is mandatory and only available to panelists of the conference.

Els de Graauw will give the first keynote lecture of this morning. She will present her research surrounding immigration, civil society organizations, urban politics, government bureaucracies, public policy, and qualitative research methods, with a focus on understanding how governmental and nongovernmental organizations build institutional capacity for immigrant integration and representation. Afterwards, there will be room for a discussion, which Marcel Lubbers will moderate.

Valentina Mazzucato is the second keynote lecturer of the day. She will present her research on the effects of migration between Africa and Europe on migrants and their families and communities back home. Afterwards, there will be room for a discussion, which Ilse van Liempt will moderate.
