Scientific basis for victim support

People who are victims of crime or who have been involved in an accident can ask for help from Victim Support Netherlands. This organisation is mainly staffed by volunteers and operated on the principle that this enables a large number of victims to be helped and that volunteers can provide easily accessible help to their fellow citizens. But what is the scientific basis for this help? Is there any existing research to prove that it works?

Victim support by volunteers, does it work?

Literature review

A review of the internationally available scientific literature was carried out to find answers to these questions, examining helpful and non-helpful responses from people surrounding victims of traumatic events and using studies that answer these questions from the perspective of the victims themselves. The results of the research will be used to provide a scientific basis for the help provided by Victim Support Netherlands and to offer suggestions for improvement and modernisation. A systematic review is already published. Other articles will be published at the beginning of 2017.
