The medieval world: closer than you think

The Middle Ages are never far away. In books, on television, or simply in the centre of Utrecht: it is tangible, visible history. The Middle Ages continue to capture the imagination and allow us to see the origins of many customs we still know today. But it was also a strange time. A time when the written word had different connotations than today. When knowledge and faith were closely linked. A time when community spirit was bound by strict rules - but where people's imagination was all the greater. Through thorough research into texts, materials and mentalities, the Medieval History department tries to bring those times - and those people - back to life.
