Utrecht University stands at the forefront of cutting-edge research in infectious diseases in humans, animals and plants, and building resilience against infectious threats. Our multidisciplinary research community unites expertise from (veterinary) medicine, biology, chemistry, and environmental sciences to tackle some of the world’s most pressing health challenges.

Within one square mile, the Utrecht Science Park harbors a unique combination of various public and private partners in infection & immunity research and care.

Our mission

Researchers of the UU faculties of Science and Veterinary Medicine, UMC Utrecht, Princess Máxima Center, University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, Hubrecht Institute and Westerdijk Institute share their knowledge and expertise to deliver a significant contribution to a better understanding of  infectious diseases  and improve the resilience of humans, animals, and plants against infectious threats.

The Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute manages a world-famous collection of living fungi, yeasts and bacteria. It is a centre of expertise for mycology and for research into moulds and fungi.

Next generation experts

Our responsibility includes educating and training the next generation of researchers to create a dynamic environment in which innovative science will continue contributing to an ever-improving outcome for human, animal and plant. Interested students can visit our other PhD programmes, Master's programmes or Bachelor programs at the University Utrecht or one of the three Life Sciences-oriented Bachelor's programs at the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences (Biology and Medical Laboratory ResearchChemistry, and Chemical Engineering).
