The Cancer domain covers the entire chain from genome to population, including molecular cancer research and the role of cancer stem cells in tumor development. At the translational level, it includes image-guided therapies and personalized cancer treatment based on genetic tumor traits. A major development is the establishment of an organoid biobank of healthy and tumor tissues that opens up new avenues to develop personal treatment modalities. The joined effort of UMC Utrecht and the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) / Anthonie van Leeuwenhoek (AVL) to establish a new highly specialized institute for adult cancer care at the Utrecht Science Park, and the establishment of the Princess Maxima Center for Pediatric Oncology in collaboration with the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital, Position Utrecht as a main center in Europe for cancer research, diagnostic and treatment.
