Jos van Putten is programme director of the Life Sciences strategic research theme as well as professor of Infectious Diseases and Immunology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. 'I see myself as a bridge-builder, someone who connects researchers at hospitals and in the laboratory and who works to build good relationships between the research work floor and those shaping policy. Creating those links between essential knowledge and innovative research will help us make the most effective strides and is, I believe, our duty to society.'
Cancer, regenerative medicine and healthy resistance
In Utrecht, the Life Sciences strategic research theme spans three key areas of investigation. First and foremost is cancer research, at both the molecular level and that of personalised treatments. Second is regenerative medicine, an area of great promise with an important focus on fundamental and applied stem cell research. Last but not least is research into infections, inflammation and immunity. A healthy immune system is vital for everyone, from newborns right on up to adults.
