Our experts
Our experts work at the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS) at Utrecht University. IRAS is an interfaculty research institute of the faculties of Veterinary Medicine, Medicine and Beta Sciences.
IRAS provides education and research on human health risks from exposure to pathogens and potentially harmful substances in the (occupational) environment and through the food chain. Effects on ecosystems are also studied.
Prof. dr. ir. Roel Vermeulen
Roel Vermeulen's research focuses on environmental factors for non-communicable diseases, with a strong emphasis on integrating epidemiology, high-quality exposure assessment/exposome analysis and molecular biology in multidisciplinary studies.
Dr. Jelle Vlaanderen
Jelle Vlaanderen conducts epidemiological research on the role of environmental factors in the development of disease. His main focus is on physicochemical and occupational exposures (part of the 'exposome') in relation to (pre-stages of) cancer and cardiometabolic diseases. Important tools in his research are the 'OMICs techniques', which measure molecular changes in the body, and biostatistics.
Dr. Anke Huss
Anke Huss is an environmental epidemiologist with a special focus on spatial distribution in environmental exposures. She is involved in advanced methods for exposure assessment, including modeling various exposures such as electromagnetic fields, pesticides and noise.
Dr. ir. Gerard Hoek
Gerard Hoek researches methods to better assess exposure to environmental factors with a focus on outdoor air pollution. He aims to apply those exposure methods in epidemiological research.
Dr. Susan Peters
Susan Peters is an epidemiologist and exposure expert. Her interests lie primarily in exposure research and the epidemiology of chronic diseases. Consequently, her research focuses on the relationship between external factors and the development of chronic diseases, such as cancer, neurodegenerative and respiratory diseases.
Dr. Ulrike Gehring
Ulrike Gehring conducts research on the impact of the environment on children's health. She is an expert on risk factors for asthma and allergies and the effects of air pollution on health.
