Process Mining Research - Autumn School

Process mining is a rapidly growing field of research. This is testified by an established research community, numerous publications and thousands of organizations applying process mining. Because of this interest, we now face a vast body of knowledge that spans multiple disciplines and covers a range of methods, tools, and techniques. A single individual may find it daunting to set up a new research line in this field. After all, it is difficult to oversee all relevant developments and to understand the different approaches available. To help and guide aspiring process mining researchers, this course aims at bringing them together.

Process mining is a rapidly growing field of research. This is testified by an established research community, numerous publications, and thousands of organizations applying process mining. Because of this interest we now face a vast body of knowledge that spans multiple disciplines and covers a range of methods, tools, and techniques. A single individual may find it daunting to set up a new research line in this field. After all, it is difficult to oversee all relevant developments and to understand the different approaches available. It may also be challenging to become part of a research community and find colleagues to collaborate with.

To help and guide aspiring process mining researchers, the process mining school offers a diverse program. First of all, experienced scholars will present overviews of the various sub-domains within process mining and present on open problems they have identified. Additionally, part of the program is devoted to research aspects such as writing (how to write?), publishing (where to submit?), and providing feedback (how to review?). Another part of the program is related to the real-world perspective on process mining by involving industrial experts into the program. Finally, there will be hands-on sessions devoted to the implementation of a process mining algorithm as a plugin in ProM (http://www.promtools.org) and the use of other, state-of-the art tools.

A very important goal of the process mining school is community-building. The idea is to foster an enjoyable and productive social interaction among the participants themselves and with the staff throughout the week. The program is organized at a beautiful, external location, away from the hustle and bustle of every-day academic life. There is ample opportunity for everyone during the classes, joint meals, outdoor and other social activities to intermingle, get to know one another, and - who knows? - setting up future collaborations.
