“Insights on the contribution of private institutions to the public goals of an open society”

How can markets and corporations meet the challenges of the 21st century and contribute to free, democratic and open societies?

Open societies pursue a set of public goals, which include wealth creation and innovation but also sustainable development, equity and social justice. However, public goals do not necessarily have to be realized by public institutions only.

The platform Markets & Corporations in Open Societies, within Utrecht research area Institutions for Open Societies, is about the contribution of private institutions to the public goals of an open society. It focuses on two key private institutions – markets and business – in the recognition that these are governance mechanisms in their own right.
