Geography Education

The Department of Human Geography and Planning deliberately aims at improving the quality of geography education at several levels by conducting research and developing projects. For higher education as well as the Bachelors’ and Masters’ programmes offered by our department, the emphasis is on internationalisation, on honours programmes and on the role of fieldwork in inquiry based learning. For secondary geography education, research is focused on the relationships between academic and school subject knowledge and educational value of geographical knowledge. Moreover, outreach and training activities help to unlock geographical and pedagogical knowledge for secondary geography teachers and a wider public.
Besides the regular education that is offered, the department participates in the Dutch language Master's programmes Geografie: educatie en communicatie (2 years; in co-operation with the Graduate School of Teaching) and Leraar voorbereidend hoger onderwijs (1 year).
Increasing the flood risk awareness of young people
