Schematizing the Observer: Theory, Experiment, and Epistemic Practice (Workshop)

Inspired by Howard Stein’s reflections on the structure of knowledge in physics and Erik Curiel’s Schematizing the Observer and the Epistemic Content of Theories”, the workshop will examine the role of observation, experiment, and modelling practices in securing the empirical content of physical theories. The workshop will explore how theories become empirically meaningful through their connection to observational and experimental practice, with particular attention to quantum theory, general relativity, and cosmology. Topics will include the epistemology of measurement, the role of observers and instruments in physical modelling, and the relation between formal theoretical structures and empirical knowledge. We also hope to discuss connections with Bohr-inspired approaches to measurement, relational interpretations of quantum theory, and broader questions concerning realism and scientific representation.

The workshop Schematizing the Observer: Theory, Experiment, and Epistemic Practice will take place on 13th of June 2026 at Utrecht University in a hybrid format (both in person and online). It will be hosted in the University Library Utrecht Sciencepark in the Bucheliuszaal 6.18 on the 6th floor. The event will start at 10:15 and last until 18:30 with the option to have dinner afterwards for those attending in person.
