Blockchain for societies

The use of blockchain is on the rise and may soon change the way citizens perceive and interact with the State. The Special Interest Group Blockchain for societies focusses on how blockchain can work for modern societies.

Taking over sovereign functions

First, blockchain application could help private companies in taking over what are traditionally seen as sovereign functions, such as currency governance, financial assistance to people in need, voting facilities (using quadratic voting system), health insurance mechanism, sports and cultural subsidies, protection of the environment.

Second, because public permissionless blockchains are being pseudonymous, decentralised, and immutable, they question our ability to enforce the Rule of Law.

Policy proposals at European level

This SIG-group ambitions to introduce policy proposals at the European level to make sure blockchain work for modern societies, with or without the State.
