Teaching Assistants (PhD/Master) - P2 '23/'24

For: a MBLS bachelor course in academic writing

We are currently looking for 5 teaching assistants for a mandatory 3,75 EC course in Academic Writing for second-year MBLS bachelor students in period 2 of next academic year ('23/'24).

Your tasks will be:

  • supervising all mandatory tutorial sessions (group size around 20 students)
  • giving feedback to students in your tutorial group
  • grading various assignments throughout the course in your tutorial group

We are looking for assistants that meet the following requirements:

  • Is a master student, a PhD student, or someone who has just completed their master or PhD
  • Is available during the following Thursday tutorial sessions from 13:15-15:00h: 16 Nov, 23 Nov, 30 Nov, 7 Dec, 14 Dec, 21 Dec, 11 Jan, 18 Jan
  • Has demonstrable fluency in English (native speaker is a strong pre) and good academic writing skills
  • Has a background in a life science-related master/PhD program, or alternatively a background in a English language/linguistics program and a strong affinity for life science writing.

The required time for this position is a total of 80 hours per teaching assistant. This is an average of 8 hrs/week during 10 weeks but note that this is not always equally distributed depending on assignment feedback and grading; keep in mind especially that the final assignment is graded between Feb 5 - Feb 19.

If you are a master student or have already finished your master or PhD, we can financially compensate you through a temporary teaching assistant contract. If you currently are under contract as a PhD student, we are (most likely) not allowed to compensate you financially, but you can discuss with your supervisor whether this temporary position can help you fulfill your education obligations or can otherwise be a valuable learning experience to you (there is no better way to improve your own writing than teaching others how to improve theirs!).

If you are interested, please send your resume and a short cover letter to k.vanommering@uu.nl
