Hans Freudenthal

The institute takes its name from German-Dutch professor Hans Freudenthal (1905-1990). Freudenthal held the chair of 'Theoretical and applied mathematics' at Utrecht University from 1946. He contributed substantially to topology, geometry and Lie group theory.

As an educator he achieved international fame as the spiritual father of realistic mathematics education. His motto was "Learning mathematics through rediscovery".
