Mental disorders cause substantial suffering and societal costs. In order to understand and treat these problems, their description and association with social, psychological and biological parameters is not enough. We need to know the causal processes that drive mental disorders. A powerful method to reach understanding of causality is to conduct well controlled laboratory experiments.
