Youth Education & Life Skills
Youth Education & Life Skills is a thematic community within the strategic theme ‘Dynamics of Youth’. Youth education and life skills are about how young people are in the world and how they learn to navigate it. What constitutes the right education and life skills to help them do this is not set in stone, but depends on their circumstances and evolves as they develop.
Multiple perspectives
Education and life skills are about offering multiple perspectives, without imposing a hierarchy. It is about inviting young people to explore their options and gather information, but ultimately to make their own choice about which path to take. Ultimately, YELS is also about compassion – following one’s feelings and developing empathy with and for one another.
Recent projects

Encounters with Difference
In this study, we are working together with young people to explore how they, from the perspective of their own lives, experience encounters with people who are different from themselves.

Bridging Continents
Young people face major societal challenges in the context of rapid digitalisation and growing resistance to diversity. That is why we have taken the initiative to organise three international ‘youth schools’.
Funding opportunities
The Youth Education & Life Skills community offers funding opportunities for events and research projects led by researchers at Utrecht University (UU) and the University Medical Centre Utrecht (UMCU). These projects focus on co-creation, multidisciplinary collaboration, community building and a playful approach.
Our team
The researchers associated with our community come from a wide and diverse range of backgrounds. This enables us to examine issues from a variety of perspectives. Our community’s activities are organised by a small group of core members.
