This page addresses the research pillar Prevention and Treatment, its related research projects and the researchers who are involved.

Prevention and Treatment

The basis for human well-being and adaptive functioning is laid in our youth. Problems occurring in early development can have long-term, often permanent, consequences (for example, addiction, aggressive behaviour, psychiatric diseases). Such problems are daunting and costly to change and are a burden to individuals, their direct environment, and society at large.

Prevention and treatment of problematic development in youth.

This pillar aims to improve the prevention and treatment of problematic development in youth by increasing our understanding of the mechanisms and by testing the effects of interventions.

The definition of normal and abnormal behaviour is subject to culture, time and developmental age

Tailored intervention strategies

The definition of normal and abnormal behaviour is subject to culture, time and developmental age and it is critically important to scientifically define the fine line between normal and problematic behavioural, mental, and neural development and to provide tailored intervention strategies taking into account the direct involvement of children, youth and their families.

Key questions

We focus on questions such as:

  • How can we assess the normal behavioural development in children and adolescents (0-18 years)?
  • What are the determinants of normal and abnormal behaviour (e.g., brain function, genetics, environment)?
  • How can we identify those in need of intervention?
  • How can we prevent or reduce problematic behaviour (e.g., in education, treatment, justice, policy)?
  • What are the long-term effects of early intervention, both in terms of development and cost-effectiveness?
  • How can we develop personalized medicine, family integrated care, education, and justice?
  • How can new technologies (e.g., e-applications) be used to screen for abnormalities and improve behavioural development, for instance through online interventions?
