Research design

In 2020 en 2021, we collected survey data among parents and their children (aged 10-18 years). In total, four measurement waves took place with +/- six months in between. Families were allowed to participate with at least one parent and one child, but ideally with two parents and a maximum of two children. The surveys included questions related to – amongst others - media use, media-specific and general parenting, mental wellbeing and personal competences. During wave 3 and 4, in addition to surveys, we also collected objective smartphone use data by asking for screen recordings of smartphone usage as registered by built-in smartphone usage tracking applications. Data-collection took place during the Covid-19 pandemic in the Netherlands.
