Metal Organic Frameworks: a Versatile Class of Advanced Materials

Jorge Gascon and Freek Kapteijn
Technische Universiteit Delft

Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are fascinating porous solids. The combination of organic and inorganic subunits on fully crystalline porous materials has led to a vast chemical versatility, giving rise to more than 10000 MOF structures. They often possess high surface areas and pore volumes, with the possibility of fine-tuning of their chemical environment by either selecting the appropriate building blocks or by post-synthetic functionalization. For many frameworks, flexibility of the lattice allows them to undergo a significant transformation in solid state. All these features make MOFs a special class of solids with the potential of transcending many common limitations in different technological disciplines.

During the lecture some of the recent MOF work performed at TUDelft, covering applications from catalysis1,2 to molecular sensing3,4 and from gas adsorption5,6 to luminescence7 and optical applications8 will be discussed.
