International collaboration

Collaboration with renowned universities all over the world

Collaboration with foreign universities is essential to high-quality research and outstanding academic programmes. For this reason Utrecht University collaborates with renowned universities all over the world, organising exchanges between researchers and lecturers, participating in fellowship programmes and providing special chairs for visiting professors.

Utrecht University has an international, university-wide strategic collaboration with a limited number of specially selected international universities: the Utrecht University Partners (UUPs). These international research universities conduct high-quality research relating to one of Utrecht University's research focus areas and collaborate with various faculties.

Utrecht University is an active member of various renowned international research and teaching networks, such as the League of European Research Universities (LERU), the Utrecht Network.

The Netherlands has five academic institutes abroad. Utrecht University co-manages institutes in Athens, St. Petersburg, Cairo, Florence, Rome and Tokyo. It is the coordinating university of the Dutch University Institute for Art History in Florence (NIKI).

At the end of 2007, the first group of seven talented Chinese students started their PhD programmes at Utrecht University. This was made possible through an agreement between Utrecht University and the China Scholarship Council (CSC), which enabled outstanding students from China to receive a grant to obtain their doctoral degree in Utrecht. To qualify for a CSC grant, the PhD candidates undergo a special selection procedure, in which both Utrecht University and the CSC participate.
