Questions about participation
Your family may participate in this study if you have a child between 3 and 6 years old. It is important that the child speaks and/or hears Dutch as well as Turkish, English or Polish at home. Bilingual children with a developmental language disorder (DLD) between 3 and 6.5 years of age can also participate (with any home/second language besides Dutch).
By participating in this study, you will help future bilingual families. The findings of this study will help professionals such as speech therapists, teachers, pediatricians, and other specialists to give better advice to parents about speaking multiple languages. It will also help them better guide children who speak more than one language.

All parts of the study play an important role in answering our research questions. It is therefore not possible to participate and skip certain sections of the study.
It is very understandable for a child to be shy when we visit. We always consider this in both the order of the tasks and in how we interact with the child. We will plan in plenty of time to get to know each other and to take some small breaks in between.
In the order and the division of the tasks, we consider the concentration span of the child. Certain tasks will require some more of the child’s attention than others, we make sure there is a good variation between these tasks and leave time for small breaks.
We use our measures to say something about groups of children. We cannot say anything about individual children. Once we have completed our study, we can send you a report with an overview of the most important findings. These will be results on group level, not on the level of individual children.
Per family, we let one child participate in the study, siblings cannot both participate. Should you have two children in the age category that we are looking for, then we will most likely request for the youngest one to participate. This is something you can discuss with the researcher.
Participation of this study is voluntary. You may stop at any moment without giving any reason for it, also on the day that the researcher is coming to visit. To stop you can always call us or send us an email.
You do not have to go anywhere. The researcher will come to visit you at home at a time that is convenient for you. The study will take place at your home.
Yes, once we have finished our study, we will send you a report with an overview of the most important results. These results are on a group level, not on the level of individual children.
