Scientific Advisory Board

The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) provides advice to the Bijvoet Center and currently consists of the following people:

Prof. dr. Hans Vliegenthart studied chemistry at Utrecht University, The Netherlands and received his PhD in 1967. He was appointed associate (1975) and full (1980) Professor and Chairman at the Department Bio-organic Chemistry at Utrecht University. He acted as Dean of the faculty of Chemistry in the periods 1985-1989 and 2000-2003, and as Research Director of the Bijvoet Center for Biomolecular Research. In 2003 he was appointed Honorary Professor Utrecht University and in 2008 Guest Professor at Nankai University, Tianjin, China. He is Member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences; Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences; Honorary Doctorates from the Universities in Debrecen, Hungary; in Llille France and in Stockholm, Sweden. Knight in the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands. He served on a large number National and International Scientific committees and is (co)-author of about 700 paper in peer reviewed journals and acted as (co)-editor of books on glycoconjugates. He is a member of a number of editorial boards and is Editor in chief of the Glycoconjugate Journal. Hans Vliegenhart is the chairman of the SAB.

Prof. dr. Keith Wilson graduated as a chemist from Oxford in 1972, then moved for his doctoral studies to the Oxford Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics under the supervision of Louise Johnson. He spent a two-year period as a group leader at the MPI in Berlin which led to the first structure of an intact ribosomal protein and two years as a lecturer in Physics in the University of York. In 1985 he moved to the EMBL in Hamburg where he was appointed Head of Outstation. Following ten years of research at the EMBL on the determination of protein structures at atomic (~1.0Å) resolution, he returned to a Chair in Chemistry in York. Keith Wilson is also on the Scientific Advisory Boards of ESRF and Diamond.

Prof. dr. Jack Johnson has been using x-ray crystallography to solve the structures of intact complex virus particles for over a decade. He received his bachelor’s degree at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin and his Ph.D. at Iowa State University. Johnson then completed his post doctoral research in Virus Crystallography at Purdue University. Johnson is currently a professor in the Department of Molecular Biology at Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, CA. Prior to joining Scripps, he was a professor at Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana. Johnson examines the structure and function of viruses, with interests in modes of viral entry, disassembly, assembly, and maturation and in the recognition events associated with each of these processes.

Prof. dr. Ad Bax was born in The Netherlands and became a U.S. citizen in 1999. He received his PhD in 1981 from the Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, for work related to the development of two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques, which he carried out at Delft and Oxford Universities. He holds an honorary doctorate from the Free University of Brussels, is a corresponding member of the Dutch Royal Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a competing member of DC Velo, and a Member of the National Academy of Sciences.
